The short answer
The route
Total time from Islamabad is usually quoted at around eight to nine hours including the jeep stretch. Leave early so you arrive before dark.
- Islamabad to Chakdara by motorway and the Malakand road, typically three to four hours.
- Chakdara to Thall along the Dir road through Timergara and Upper Dir, typically another three hours or so.
- Thall to Kumrat: a rough, partly unpaved road with stream crossings where a 4x4 jeep is the normal choice.
What to see
- The Panjkora river and the deodar forest at Kumrat.
- Jahaz Banda meadows, a popular trek from the valley.
- Katora Lake, a longer trek for fit hikers with a local guide.
- Camping huts and riverside guesthouses in Thall and Kumrat.
Best time to go
Roughly May to September is the main season. Monsoon rain can make the roads slippery, and winter snow closes much of the valley. Ask us about road conditions before you set a date.
Vehicle: what we recommend
A Prado, Land Cruiser or Fortuner is comfortable for the long drive to Thall, and a local 4x4 jeep handles the last rough stretch. Our driver can arrange the plan with you in advance so the handover in Thall is smooth.
A simple 3-day plan
- Day 1: Islamabad to Thall, then the jeep into Kumrat. Settle in and walk by the river.
- Day 2: Jahaz Banda or a forest walk, depending on weather and fitness.
- Day 3: return to Thall and drive back to Islamabad.
